MEET THE NEW POWERS - SAME AS THE OLD POWERS!

The names have changed over the years. When I started Tax Investigation Services, the process was known as investigation.

Then Tax Investigations became Tax Enquiries.

Then Tax Enquiries were joined by Tax Compliance Checks.

Whatever the official name, the whole process generally continues to be known as 'investigation'.

See the headline above. HMRC's 'new powers' are not in fact the same as the old powers. They are more far-reaching. But still, whether known as investigations, enquiries or compliance checks, they will more often than not involve a detailed examination of the taxpayers business and private financial circumstances. This has always been the case.

Can you provide evidence of your income and capital appreciation? If you cannot, the taxman's opinion will always take precedence. Guilty until proved innocent? Exactly right.
